Looseleaf Lapsang Souchong

Looseleaf   Assam

 Looseleaf Jasmine

£3-50

Lapsang Souchong is a smoked tea with a distinctive flavour, with the heady aroma of an oak fire. The tea originates from the Fujian province of China. The Fukienese word ‘souchong’ means subvariety, that is a subvariety of other black teas from the Wuyi mountains of Fujian. When Lapsang Souchong was first exported to western European countries and became famous on the international markets it was no doubt due to the distinct aroma and flavour. Interestingly the best Lapsang is produced in the nature preserve located in the Wuyi mountains where the high mountains with thick pine forests and heavy mist provide the ideal environment for growing top quality tea

Assam is a full bodied tea with good malty flavour, which is good all day. The Assam valley in Indian is dominated by the Brahmaputra River - a large slowly meandering river which over millennia of spring and fall flooding has deposited a rich loam over the valley. The soil is a deep and sandy and the region suffers a very hot and steamy monsoon season, but equally important a relatively dry and cool winter.

The tea is made from the top two leaves and the bud of new season growth. These delicate leaves are then hand rolled into the small pearls. When you infuse these pearls in your tea cup, you will see the top two leaves and the bud come to life.  The new tea season starts in China in late March/early April and it is during the first 4 weeks that the best teas are manufactured. After this initial period the quality of the teas and green leaf start to deteriorate rapidly and the teas become quite plain. Dragon Pearls are only made from tea plucked in the first 3 weeks of the new season. Coinciding with the new tea growth, the jasmine bushes are in spring bloom. Only the most fragrant blossoms are used (from bushes that are known to produce the most fragrant flowers). These fresh flowers are layered between the tea and before long the intense and uplifting fragrance of the new jasmine blooms is passed on to the tea. An extraordinary taste experience!
